7705 SAR R6.0 Configuration Note 2Port 10GigE Ring Card Last
Updated: 2013-04-28 Version
1.0
Introduction:
The 2port 10GigE ring adapter card/module (also known as the 2–port 10GigE (Ethernet) Adapter card/module) provides a cost–effective solution for operators to increase the port capacity of their backhaul ring networks in order to accommodate the highly increased bandwidth usage in data networks.
The physical ports on the 2p 10GigE Ring card/module are booted up in bridging mode and it can neither be disabled nor altered. Similar to a bridge, the physical 10GigE ports bridge Ethernet frames among themselves and the local network port, called the Virtual port (v-port). Given the Ethernet bridging functionality associated with the physical ports, no IP/MPLS configuration can be made against them. For traffic that is received on one of the physical 10GigE ports, the destination can be the L2 port facing the L3 port in NW mode (i.e. configured on the virtual-port) or the other physical port.
The operation of the 2 port 10GigE ring card/module can be compared to a VPLS service hooked to a network port using an external link with the following characteristics:
o The two 10GigE ports, along with an internal add/drop port, are bonded in a fixed L2 multi-point bridging service. These ports only bridge traffic–based on learned and programmed MAC addresses.
o The internal add/drop port represents a L2 port and is only used to add or drop L2 traffic to and from the ring. The add/drop port is internally connected to the v-port, which is fixed in network mode. All IP/MPLS configuration is carried out on the interfaces bound to the v-port.

Configuring an IP interface on the v-port:
Since the physical ring ports operate as bridge ports, IP interface configuration must be done on the v-port.

QoS on 2p 10GigE Ring card:
The internal architecture of the ring card is shown below:
By default, all the ports perform 16-priority scheduling. Different QoS policies are available that can be configured at different points of congestion.
Network Ingress QoS policy for 10GigE Ring ports:
Classification can be done based on the ingress traffic’s dot1p value only.
As with any network policy, the default network policy is 1.
